— Moustafa Sebaa —
Junior Consultant & Projects Engineer
3,5 years of experience
Profile Intro
I have extensive experience in research and technical definition of projects in the energy and environment sectors. During this experience, I picked different problems, started with multiple hypothesis and ended-up creating thousands of PowerPoint Slides to transform messages into simplified workflows, charts and diagrams that provide value in an effective and consise manner. I sucessfully drafted solutions to problems of multiple dimensions of complexity: physical, decision-making, organizational and commercial... thanks to my skills in research, data analysis, and project management, combined with my passion for energy and sustainability
My Road Ahead
My destination is clear. I'm considering a career in energy & sustainability consulting. I have grit to contribute to energy & environmental challenges by coordinating the efforts of financial, technical and strategic departments in the Energy & CleanTech industries. With this clarity, my priorities fall into place & start by:
finding the best environment where I can grow and contribute: An environment where ideas are sharp and human relationships are vital. (are you what I'm looking for?)
working with clients on solutions around energy efficiency, energy productivity, strategies around net-zero mitigation and sustainability design.
5 Highlighted Skills : Why you should hire me.
In addition to a one day virtual consulting experience with BCG - Boston Consulting Group, what will make me successful for sustainability consulting is that I have a strong passion for Energy, Digital Transformation & Sustainability, and I'm able to cummunciate and research very well, and I have data technical skills and able to manage multiple projects.
Research
The 3 projects mentioned in this page demonstrate my ability to conduct research, make analysis and draw conclusions in sectors as Energy & Environment.
I demondtrated that I'm able to tackle new cases, find the information, gather data, understand new practices and standards, design protocols and suggest workflows.
1- read through technical articles
2- inteview professional leaders: being able to talk to experts in multiple institutions, and get the types of data to help answer certain questions.
3- Writing technical proposals, question hypothesis and provide solutions.
The success of this role of consulting is pretty much based on running research about clients' businesses and needs. This is why I am putting this skill upfront.
Data analysis
In 2016, I used Origin to calibrate different models and correlations. Then in 2018, I used matlab, excel, tableau to vizualize data, build algorithms and design an interface to a basic app. Finally, in 2020, I used Fiji to analyze images, and Matlab to visualize and analyze data.
I believe that I can use these skills in Sustainability Consulting to understand the impact of the clients, and draw conclusions:
1- filter and organize data,
2- perform assessment and analysis,
3- share the results in a comprehensive way: Use data to tell a story needed for the client.
Project management
In 2017, I used MS Project to draft a 3-year operations program of Logging and Testing Services.
At a personal level, to be able to prioiritize my work, I used Notion to personalize my tasks, and built simple tracking systems on Google Spreadsheets (example).
Overall, I believe that I'm good at working on multiple projects that are coming in the same time. Drow the big picture, understand the priority of each one, their deadline, how much energy they will take... etc. Which is simething I expect in this role of consulting.
Communications
What's the point of doing all that research if I'm not able to tell the story to who it needs to go to ?
In my last projects and volunteering experiences, I demonstrated my ability to design the core message and get it across the audience by:
1- writing: articles, brochures, summaries, infographics, designed workflows...
2- verbal: communciate information verbally. Having short and consise language, presenting work in meetings, and making short videos about certain topics...
Passion
Fuled by a true will to make a difference, I am strongly motivated by advising others (internally & externally) to get a one step closer to a better sustainable world.
I believe that in this work, passion is really important. Don't you think so ?

μCT : X-rays and Neutrons
Measure of porosity and salt content, as well as identification of fractures initiation and growth.
Reporting, Research and Analysis
Summarizing, writing and presenting.
Image & data Analysis
As the results of my experiments are usually images, I had to learn how to analyze images and study their texture to measure the time-lapse porosity and the swelling of the sample. I developed an algorithm on Fiji & Matlab to do this. Also, I used Matlab to build a porosity map to vzualize the porosity matrix.
Other projects & Documents
These projects are about material characterization using direct & indirect techniques, and Fracture Mechanics, failure, poromechanics.
Attitude & Behaviour
Meetings
The COVID-19 came with restrictions where we had to stop all the running experiments over night (on March 16, 2020). Since then, we were e-meeting at least once a week to discuss the work progress and future steps, until my graduation on Sept. 7th, 2020.
Reporting
I developed my own reporting style : Here is the link to have an idea about it. I used it also to help other PhD students organize their work and apply for pee-reviewing opportunities.

Click here to read a summary of my thesis.
Gained Skills
Technological intelligence
From literature, PR, market research agencies and event conferences, I collected data of 620+ EOR projects based on 17 parameters.
Product design
I designed an app that may help decision-makers and EOR experts capitalize their knowledge on the most promising EOR technique for a given reservoir.
Data Visualization
Using Excel & Tableau to visualize data and drow conclusions. Data presentation is important in the screening process as we're asked to present the comfort zone of each parameter where the EOR technique could be feasible. Summarizing the database into one table was challenging but so rewarding.
Research Proposal Writing
Drawing a thorough understanding of the State of the Art, the limitations of current projects, and possible development is something I particularly enjoy. All my projects and recommendations has been designed as project proposals, and have been successfully presented so far.
Deploting AI to solve problems
I learned how to use an AI-based technology that best combines human intelligence and machine power: Fuzzy Logic. I fed the Fuzzy Logic toolbox of Matlab with 24+ fuzzy rules based on the data to deliver the best decision.
Agile planning
As the topic was new with no prior database, we had to plan for its progress in an agile way. The projct scope has been shaped over 5 times, and deeply discussed after completion of project segments.

Attitude & Behaviour
Meetings
During this project, I had different meetigs with my supervisors but also with other EOR Experts where I pitched the project idea and had feedback & different rich conversations. At the end of the project, I had multiple meetings with executives present the project under a New Research Unit focused on combining EOR and AI.
Grit
In the process of seeking information in the litterature, and exchanging with experts, I developed a huge curiosity and had enormous grit to develop integrated digital solutions, and to contribute new ideas.
Confs for Networking
Participating in conferences empowers me and feeds my curiosity. Exchanging with peers and learning from experts is priceless to me.
Future Endavours
The ultimate reason of EOR Screening is to highligh, accurately & in a short time, the most promising EOR processes for Engineers and decision-makers to orient future lab & modelling work.
One of the big remaining challenges of the screening techniques is that they look at parameters separately, where in reservoir everything is dependent. This is why the next steps after the screening need competent experts to have their own philosophiy about the reservoir and make analytical studies.
Understand what we measure, in order to see can we interpret it and use it in digital tools, such us wettability and heterogeneity. Enriching the database to build modules for all EOR subcategories is essential.
Perform a full CT scan to samples from regions of interest, consider and correct other parameter (ex. heterogeneity and wettability), and set up a strategy to use real-time data.
In addition to screening, I thought that we could use this tool as a rich resource backed by data visualization that can serve experts for the next steps by guiding them through previous projects, field and lab tests.

Collected and analyzed GIS data and implemented forecasting models
Developed many scenarios with different energy storage techniques
Collaborated with multiple teams to understand the global challenges with focus on gas turbine power plant
Results
Delivered an overall suggestion of the potential energy mix for various regions
Gained Skills
Dispatching system
During my internship at Sonalgaz, I had access to the control room where I learned how to control the whole power plant, but also which data and communications are done with regional dispatching system to keeping the grid operating.
GIS Data
Having limited access to GIS data, I could've been able to identify local resources, qualitatively predict the evolution of the region in terms of population and energy consumption. Based on the data & prediction, I could have make a suggestion of the desired location to implement a hybrid power plant of gas turbines and solar power with different storage capabilities, in the region of Bechar.
Strategic mindset
At early age, I was passionate about Strategic challenges that goes beyong impacting my ecosystem. Ensuring access to energy is one of the ethical considerations I'm driven by.
This is kind of an empathy that I couldn't experess until today, and I believe it is a big driving factor to keep me working on such challenges to design solutions that may impact the lives of other for the better.
