Facing life from a very early age
Do you remember your first job ? What were the lessons you’ve learned from it? and what would the youngest you say about you now? and vise-versa.
For me, I started working at the age of 14 as a Busser in a big restaurant located on the side of a very busy highway (RN°5, for those who have the ref.), which means that thousands of people pass by and services begin early in the morning and end late in the evening. I was the first to wake up and the last to go to sleep - Let’s not get me started on the salary.
That wasn’t my first encounter, but the first time I actually got a paycheck, and the first time I got confronted with the realities of life. Anyway, I was - alone - responsible for the kitchen hygiene, with only sporadic assistance during pick hours (it was manual, no cleaning machine by then). Well, I needed that job and I needed that experience.
Ambitious by nature, I was trying to accomplish more so cooking was next on the list. No one taught me, I earned it. I started with the basics on how to safely handle a knife, how to cut things quickly and fast, until I occupied the chief-assistant role, after dozens of experiences, in another restaurant-service-company.
I learned it the hard way, but this taught me to:
Be responsible,
Work under pressure in a sweltering environment (kitchen),
Be organized and handle my emotions,
Be correct, value others’ efforts, and treat them as I’d like to be treated,
Earn my respect,
Know my value,
The necessity to ask for and to expect a correct win-win relationship (employee/er),
It doesn’t matter from where I start, as long as I know why I’m doing it and where I’m headed,
Never be, or at least try not to be ashamed.
That was yesterday, today all I have left are priceless lessons and values.
